The powerboat equivalent of Formula One car racing is the F1 Powerboat World Championship race. Annually the championship races take place in 13 venues across the globe, one of them being Abu Dhabi.

The racing boats used are 20 foot tunnel hull catamarans which can reach speeds of up to 250km/h. these powerful vessels can go from 0 to 160km/h in 4 seconds.

Abu Dhabi International Marine Spots Club was originally established as an organizational body for powerboat racing but now it provides opportunities for those seeking to experience the boats themselves.

Powerboat Events and Festivals in Abu Dhabi

Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship is hosted in Abu Dhabi since 1993 and is the first city in the Middle East to have the honor of hosting this event.

The UAE is represented in the race each year and they often gain good positions in the leading teams. The race marks the end of the five day Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Festival which features several sports events and shows.

UAE Wooden Powerboat Championships take place in October where traditional 28 foot wooden boats compete. Their traditional name is Al Shawaheef and boats from across the gulf compete.

Best Time of Year for Powerboat Racing in Abu Dhabi

If you want to see the ultimate Grand Prix of UAE in Abu Dhabi the best time of year to visit is in late November, early December.

As the days vary slightly each year you can check with the F1H²O websites for the exact schedule. In 2012 the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is on 29th and 30th of November.

If you can stay over a 10 day period you could travel to Sharjah as well to see the Grand Prix which happens there a few days after the Abu Dhabi race (6th and 7th of December in 2012).

During the race period there are other forms of entertainment in the city and the event is rounded off with a fireworks display on the last night. Also in the region is the Grand Prix of Qatar, Doha which is held in March.
